a break in the weather

Music post ahead—
I was flipping through my old music earlier today and came across a mix CD that I made in early 2002, when I was a freshman in college. I popped it in and listened to it as I was driving around town, and good lord did it take me back—coming back to my dorm room late at night on the weekends, still slightly drunk, the smell of Auston's fabric softener transferred to my own clothes, happy and confused and just barely an adult. Those really were the days, in hindsight.
It's interesting how certain music almost becomes part of you, imprinted somewhere in your brain in such a way that even after not listening to some of these songs for over a decade, I remembered them all precisely. (If not, in a lot of cases, the exact reason why I thought they were worthy of inclusion on a mix CD at the time.)
Tracklisting and related thoughts
1. Enrique Iglesias - "Escape"
if you feel like leaving, I'm not gonna beg you to stay
This was my jam, every Friday and Saturday night as I was getting ready for bed. I've never been a huge Enrique fan, but I've always been in love with this song.
2. Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get You Out of My Head"
la la la la la la la la
It was 2002; was anyone not listening to this song back then?
3. NSYNC - "Somewhere Someday"
someday it'll be for the better
So, when this song first came on, I had a moment of "OMG, how could I have forgotten this amazing gem of an NSYNC song?!" But then I got home and did some research, and now I have no clue how I ever stumbled upon it in the first place. Apparently, it's from the soundtrack of Pokémon: The First Movie, which I definitely wasn't watching, and additionally, there was no music video ever made for it, at least not that I can find. So I have no earthly idea where I found this song or why I was listening to it, especially since, by this time, I had long moved on from NSYNC to other pursuits.
Still. I remember every word. And has Justin ever sounded better?
4. Counting Crows - "Colorblind"
pull me out from inside
I'd forgotten all about this song, too—which, in hindsight, seems crazy. It's beautiful.
5. Placebo - "Special K"
just like I swallowed half my stash and never, ever wanna crash
One of their best, and the song all my college friends liked (even if they didn't understand or share my enthusiasm for Placebo).
6. Shakira - "Underneath Your Clothes"
I love you more than all that's on the planet, movin' talkin' walkin' breathin'
To this day, I haven't been able to embrace Shakira's English-language albums the way I did her Spanish-language catalog, but this is the one exception. It's everything I love about her voice and her songwriting. Also, it spoke to me at the time, like...a lot.
7. Lifehouse - "Hanging by a Moment (live acoustic version)"
standing here until you make me move
Again, it was 2002. Strangely, this isn't even the only Lifehouse song on this CD.
8. Aneiki - "Pleased to Meet You"
I can't get my arms around you, we are silent worlds apart
I was majorly into Savage Garden at the time (and also reading a lot of fic), so I was willing to humor Daniel Jones and his little side project. This song was always fun.
9. Janet Jackson feat. Diddy and Missy Elliot - "Son of a Gun (Bad Boy Remix)"
I make my dough in just one show, you know
Yeah, I don't know why this is on here. It's a good song, but I don't remember particularly liking it.
10. Nelly Furtado - "I'm Like a Bird (live version)"
your faith in me brings me to tears, even after all these years
Again, it was 2002, so.
11. Lifehouse - "Breathing"
I want nothing more than to sit outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing
I want to say this song was featured on an episode of"The Hills" actually it would've been "Laguna Beach," or something? As if that's a valid reason to like it and/or include it on a mix CD, but there you go.
12. Sarah Connor feat. TQ - "Let's Get Back to Bed - Boy!"
I'm not your sister, you're not my brother, there's so many things that we should discover
Does anyone else remember this song? I don't think it got any airplay on US radio, but it was everywhere when I was in the UK the summer before I started college. I can't help bopping my head along to the beat, even as I laugh at the lyrics. "Miss Sarah, I wanna wear you like a Gucci sweater." Indeed.
And oh goodness, the video.
13. DJ Encore - "I See Right Through to You"
it's not like I don't feel your mood
I can't remember if this was a leftover from Europe, or if it was happening in America too? Either way, I jam.
14. Dave Matthews Band - "The Space Between"
there's no hope in you for me
This is a head-scratcher, too. I mean, I liked DMB well enough, but of all of their songs that I rocked my freshman year in college, I don't understand why this is the one I included on the CD.
15. U2 - "Beautiful Day"
see the canyons broken by cloud, see the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
I liked it then, I like it now. The lyrics.
16. Vanessa Carlton - "A Thousand Miles"
if I could just see you tonight
I think most girls were obsessed with this song at the time, at least for a while.
