horizon_greene: Robert Smith singing (winning pitcher & his catcher)

Yesterday was a day. The traffic getting to the game was the worst I'd ever seen. We were still in the car, going nowhere, during the military flyover, and I was having a minor meltdown because we didn't spend all that money to sit in the fucking car aslkfjalskdf. But we managed to fling ourselves into our seats in time for the first pitch, and then Jess brought me a beer, and the situation improved.

And then Tim gave up three runs in the first inning, which was an oops, but at least he looked magnificent, with his hair everywhere and this super-defiant set to his shoulders. He's very thin; curves are gone, but he's got cheekbones for days again.

And Buster was back behind the plate, and it was a beautiful thing, even if the game was not.

Nice set! I especially like #5 from the top where Tim looks off balance, and the two at the bottom where he's up to bat. :)

I like the ones at bat too :) I enjoy documenting exercises in futility!

Wow, these are so crisp! What lens were you using?

I use this lens (http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/2161/AF-S-VR-Zoom-NIKKOR-70-300mm-f%252F4.5-5.6G-IF-ED.html), cranked up to 300, manual focus (the auto focus is complete crap—took exactly one outing to figure that out). It's nothing fancy, but it gets the job done for my purposes :)

They really are fantastic photographs, my favorite is the third from last. I love how he's the only point of focus, him being surrounded by all that field, and his interesting low placement in the composition and the diagonal line of his body, and oh the vignetting too -- what a perfectly frozen moment!!! :O

Thank you! Judging from your comments, I'd wager you're a photographer as well. Have you posted any of your stuff?

Incredible photos!

I noticed Tim cut his hair only a little. I think our hair is the same length now.

His hair is magnificent right now! When he would stand on the mound staring down the next batter, it was like this epic swath across his left shoulder. Beautiful.

I was JUST NOW admiring that photo. And this one:

Those eyes, I just can't even.

The guy in the green jacket—his face says it all, really.

Yes :/ And yet, seeing him out there, I didn't miss them. He was at his best when he looked like this.

Great photos! I'm totally jellus of your ability to catch him on the mound -- all of my good pictures are of him waiting to hit or before he starts his motion, because it's the only time he's slow enough for my camera (and my ability). What are your thoughts about the park?

Having a camera where you can control the shutter speed is beyond helpful :)

I like Chase Field, generally, although I liked it more a couple of years ago, before it become overrun with earnest Dbacks bandwagoners. Used to be quite a lot of Giants fans that would go to the games, but they've been squeezed out somewhat, thanks to the local team's success. But it's a beautiful park, especially when they have the roof and the side panels open. You see a lot of flight traffic from the airport, which I like.

Interesting...I'm not normally a fan of the covered parks, even when they're open, but most of my experience is Miller Park in Milwaukee. At some point, I will have to make it to Arizona and check it out.

It's the side panels—they really do make a difference!

Please do come to AZ one of these days! And keep me apprised of any such plans :)

These are *fantastic.* It's inspiring to know that you can take such pictures with a zoom. Makes me want to learn more about photography.

I think my favorites are 7 and 8. I love the threesome in 7 and the way the ball's halfway between Panda and Crawford. And, as Rokimova says, the composition of 8 is unusual and beautiful.

While watching this game, I was hoping that you'd managed to go - probably the only guaranteed Timmy start of the whole season because of opening day.

That stadium and its infield gave the Giants a run for their money.

And the D-backs kinda did, too, come to think of it. ;-)

I find it very interesting that people like #8 particularly—I almost didn't bother including it in the set because I wasn't all that sure of it (I kept wishing I'd caught him with his leg kicked up ever-so-slightly higher). But I guess that's the beauty of the thing; people react differently and individually to photographs, and you never can tell.

That series was kind of a hot mess for SF, wasn't it? Even Sunday's game—I was like *chortle chortle*, six-run lead, no way we're losing this one. AND THEN.

Sheesh.

Ooh, gorgeous shots! I think my favorite is #2 - it's such a different one-footed balance than anything he does during his pitching motion. A really endearing stance.

I'm partial to #2 as well—love the sweep of his hair. Hopefully we get a better performance tomorrow!

This must look like such a random comment, which it is, but my LJ used to be [livejournal.com profile] sourberrie in case the new name throws you off. Anyway, I'm not sure if you still follow the Suns, but this funny interview with Steve Nash just came on and it made me think of you and wonder if you had seen it.

So yeah, I'll stop being random lol.

That was a fantastic interview! Thanks so much for sharing it.

I do still follow the Suns—just got back from the arena after tonight's final game. Had to pay my respects to the guy if he is in fact on his way out the door.
